Default LAUNCHING into gear

well, got her back after the mechanic was a little more than a month late. Got the engine and engine compartment restored, new intake (Performer), new carb (edelbrock 750), MSD billet tachdrive, MSD 6AL, and MSD blaster. When I got her home, I was noticing something. (note: car is an automatic, and 454 '70) when I'd go from park into reverse, it feels like I'm getting a big push into the gear. Same when I go into drive. Is there something wrong, or is this just the power I should've expected from all of the new toys?

if my tach is right, like ~5000. I'll check again from my ride home. What should it be idling at?

I'm no expert but I know that idling at 5000 RPM is not right. You should be more in the range of ~ 1500 for fast idle and ~ 700 for normal idle.

better check those #'s again, maybe you meant more toward 500, anyway, 700-800 is what I prefer on my car. All depends on how much lump you wanna feel

yeah, I'm an idiot. The tach didn't work when I got the vette, so I never paid attention to it. yeah is x100, not x1000, right now it Idles betweet 650 and 800. When I first got it back from the mechanic, it was idling closer to 1000, I think it just needed to be broken in. I've noticed I get more of that launching feel when it idles between 800 and 900, which happens sometimes for some reason, usually after being driven for a bit. I just hope its not hurting the transmission (automatic)

Sounds like your idle speed is fine. You may be experiencing the joys of worn u-joints. You can try a fairly simple experiment that should help you tell if that's the case...
Start Car
Put Car in Reverse
Put Car in Drive
Put Car in Neutral (not park, just one bump up)
Put Car back in Drive

Did you feel the same jolt the second time the car was put in drive, or was it smaller or gone? If it was smaller/gone, you've probably got worn u-joints either on your drive line, or on your half shafts...

I'll be sure to try the test, but here's what I've noticed. I've noticed I idle higher in Park than in any other position. At Park I'm at like 900-1000, but in R,D,N, etc, I'm at 650-700......

Also, sometimes, on a fresh start, I'm Idling at 1000-1100, then I give a little gas for a small rev, and then it goes down to 700-800.....

What does it all mean?

Thats just your choke, that is normal. It does that to help your engine warm up a little in the morning.

Yep, that's just your choke. You need to let your engine warm up for a bit, then blip the throttle to unset the choke. Once you're up to operating temp, I'd expect your idle (in PARK) to be around 700RPM or so. If you put your car in drive while it's fast idling, I wouldn't be surprised it if pulls a bit, especially if you don't have your foot firmly planted on the brake. Our cars like to squat a bit if the back brakes slip a bit and the front hold...
