Default Exaust for an '81

i have a stock 81, and i was talking to the local trusted mechanic about putting exaust on.. he mentioned a few magazines.. but me being a stupid 20 year old.. i forgot the names. he said a 78 (i beleve he said 78) exaust system would fit right under my 81 w/ no mods. and the 78 would have no catalitic converters (which is what i'm goin for)

anyone know if the 78 will fit under my car w/ no mods.. and no cats... and can anybody recomend any places that sells complete systems.. that will make my car sound like a straight pipe.. big block 454?

thanks

As I understand it, the earlier exhaust systems won't fit the '81 due to the different x-member. The '81 has both pipes running under the x-member on the p.side where the x-member has a dip in it to clear the stock single pipe/cat. I fitted a Mid America 2 1/2" dual system on mine & think it's the best thing I did to it. Sounds much better & the seat of the pants power increase was     :D :D :D
Don't know about a 454, but you can get it to sound like a straight pipe 350 with the right "mufflers" ;)

Just had my 81's exhaust converted last month. I contemplated going with Mid Americas 2 1/2 inch exhaust but after taking it too the muffler shop they could do it for about the same price. Geographics have alot to do with it price wise, ie competition and freight. I had previously purchased the mufflers from Summit and the shop had no problem installing them. I went with true 2 1/2 duals no cat to delta flowmaster 40's with SS tips. Looks, sounds, and runs better now. Everyone has their own preferences as to the sound and modifications of their exhaust systems. I am tickled pink with my exhaust system now :D :flag

Unless you know someone in MA that can help get a sticker, you will need
to retain your converters (at least for inspection). Many folks keep the old
system to swap in for this purpose. I would not trust any mechanic that
tells you a '78 doesn't have cats. All US production cars 75-up had 'em.
The People's Republic of Massachusetts requires 'em.

NH also requires all OEM equipment - but since we have no emmisions
testing - few places check or care.

Personally, I would find a good local custom exhaust shop and have them
install a system - if I were you. Of course, Boxford has very few custom
exhaust shops. Try Lawrence or Lowell. Mine was done by a previous owner at Jay's Custom Exhaust in Lowell (1992) for $275 with basic turbo mufflers.

Good luck. :seeya
