See, I've been driving around for awhile now with no pass side door panel. The previous owner had stripped all but one of the holes out so short of putting screws in with BIG washers that door panel isn't going to stay on. After checking prices for new panels a thought occured to me, if I glued some sheet aluminum to the BACK of the door that would give the screws something to hold. Bear in mind this panel is already shot and I'm only looking at this as a temporary solution. When I do the interior I want to do everything at once so everything matches.
Re: Is it Bubba to glue.............. (Cookwithvette)
You might even try filling the hole with something like "liquid nails" that's tough and doesn't dry quite solid so the screw would then have something to bite. Cheaper than aluminum, and can be removed by scraping it off.
I think ideally you'd want the holes welded closed then punched to get the proper shape to the metal back, but the resto guys are the ones to ask about doing it right. Once I get my vette I plan on haking it up pretty bad :smash:
The one that is on there now is junk. All the holes had little brass sleves (ferrules?) that the screws would hold to the metal door panel. I am talking about using some sheet aluminum I have sitting around, gluing it to the back of the fiber panel and using that to spread the load and hold the panel in place when the screws are attached.
Sorry, I can't really explain it better, it is a weird idea.

Hey Matt,
Before you get all sticky, I've got a used set of black door panels off a '70 or '71. If you want to pay shipping I will give them to you. I will double check them in the morning to see the condition. If I remember right they have some wear at the elbow pad you could hide with those stick on repair covers and I used the "U" trim on another set of panels but I think the holes are still okay for mounting. And they are off a power window car so no extera holes. I think Roadway will ship, slow but cheap.

I'm with Matt. Velcro does work good.
You can buy it in the craft store real cheap. Buy the adhesive tape stuff and stick it to one side- put the two pieces of velcro together and pull tape off other side- replace door panel and it lines up the piece perfectly. Works great.
It may still be a Bubba fix, but atleast it's a Modern day Bubba fix.

Sounds like it's work to me. Just make sure you use sand paper to rough up the surface of the door panel 1st, and clean really well before gluing. No one will even see the repair, and if it works and looks better than using much larger washers, then why not do it? This doesn't even come close to Bubba type work, but is more what I'd call a good low budget repair.
Greg, thank you very much, that is very kind of you. I think I'm going to go with velcro though. My mother has a ton of it around from her crafting days. Again, thank you.
