Default MSD engine KNOCK alert kit ?

Hi

Is anybody here using the " MSD engine KNOCK alert " kit offered by JEGS http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...67&prmenbr=361
Does it work ? Is it easy to adjust to your engine ? Do you need to force the engine to " ping " to assure it's working ( alarming ) right ?
I would think about using it on my 68 big block 427 CI solid lifter square port engine.

Thanks Gunther :seeya

you can test knock sensors by taking a hammer and tapping on the block or even on the exhaust manifolds.

I have never run one, but it would help if you have to run some crappy gas and don't want to blow up the block.
Personally I would rather run an O2 sensor and gage and make sure the engine is turned well with that.
It may be good for a work truck that has to pull heavy loads up some hills, but for a daily driver I would just worry about tuning it right.

why not just get a GM ESC and knock sensor. All you need is 12V and ground to the ESC, connect the knock sensor and connect a led in series w/ a 1K Ohm resistor to the signal output of the ESC. and the 12V source.

It's that simple?
What car has that GM ESC knock sensor? Can I get it off of a junkyard? How does the thing work? I thought it's kind of a mechanically coupled micro and the signal has to be evaluated by some sort of electronics?

I'd like to have THAT!

Prost!:cheers:

It's THAT simple indeed :)

All fuel injected GM cars and the L81 (81 vette) have them.

There's a little difference in the systems, 81 - 86 have a normal circuit.
81 & 82 (maybe 84 too, can't remember) have a somewhat POS knock sensor w/ funky conenctor. The later ones have aa toadstool shaped connector which is better. ESC's from 87 up roller motors have an "ignore" circuit in it to eliminate the knock detect going of from the roller noise. If you have a gear drive or any other noisy device that's the one to get.

The device is indeed a little microphone and the ESC box is an amplifier/interpreter.
82 ESC:

The pinouts are:

A= ESC sensor shield (connect to outside shield of ESC sensor input wire,)
B= ESC sensor input (looks like a coax cable w/ shield, later ones don't have this)
C= empty
D= empty
E = empty
F = 12V ignition (fuse w/ 10amp fuse)
G = empty
H = empty
J = Spark retard signal (output!)
K = ESC ground

that's all there is to it.

Hi

Do solid lifters count as noise devices ?

Thanks, will check up with GM ( or scrap yard ).

My L81 didn't come with one.

yeah solids would trigger the knock sensor too so I'd get the one with the ignore circuit

yeah, the 81 doesn't have a knock circut, error on my side , oh well :) thanks for clearing that one up

I was gonna put an excuse here about drinking a couple of brewskys and not having my full 100% attention with it but then I looked at the time I posted it and I'd either be lying or I'd get known as the forum drunk ;) :crazy: can't have that now can we :)

Well you had me thinking, because the 81's did come with a computer controlled distributor. I was about to go out there and look for it to be sure, but I knew I hadn't come accross it during my disassembly. :)
