I just bought an extra set of rallye wheels for my 69 so I can mount radials for general driving around. They are the correct 15 x 8 with a 4" backspace from Eckler's. I was thinking of mounting 245-60R-15 tires on there but started to wonder if they would clear without mods to the car. I read before where someone mounted 255-60R-15 tires on a similar year car but can't remember if modifications were required. Anyone have any info on this so I don't screw up ?
I'm running 255/65R-15's on my 69 with the stock rally's.
My entire suspension has been rebuilt and I don't have any problems with rubbing or clearance.
I think they look good and fill up the wheel well nicely.
I'm know other wheels and tires would be better for performance but I have always liked the way the Rally Wheels look so I stuck with them.
What I did was find a good tire shop around town and purchased one tire from them, had them mount it, then I took it home and tried it on. Pay special attention to the rear parking brake cable bracket. I decided to grind the bracket down about 1/8" so I can run the 255/60-15's, but I suppose 245/60-15's would fit OK without grinding. I did take the tire back and had them mount a different tire, they did the exchange and remount for free...America's Tire Company did this for me. But, most national shops will do this for you.
I have never heard of anyone having problems with 255s fitting on the rear? Grinding's only needed for 275+ The front depends on the condition of your suspension, but in my case (with worn out 68k mile suspension) I only had very slight frame-rub when I was forcing the wheel against full-lock...and how often do you do that on the street? 245s are the safe way to go, if you're into that :D Good luck!
