I am in a desperate search for a good twin disk clutch. So far all I could find is a street twin from Mcloed, and ram. but I cannot find anyone who sells them or can give me info as to what kind of material the friction surface is. Can anyone here help point me in a good direction.
I've used the Tilton double and triple disc clutches in dirt track cars. I've used the 7" style. They make a 5" one too. I had problems with the double lasting, so I went to a triple. You can sandwich an auto flex plate in between to use the stock starter. These discs are solid, no springs. I'm not sure how they would work on the street. These discs were about .100" thick and the friction surface appeared to be sprayed on, and looked to be heavy in bronze.
I have used the Street Twin for about 5 years with no problems. Any of the mail order places will have them - I got mine from Summit. It comes as a matched set of flywhee, discs, bearing, and pressure plate. You can call McLeod directly for part numbers. They have different options for flywheels (steel, aluminum, lightweight).
So wait you got the twin disk including the flywheel? how much did this run you? I called summit and they stated just the clutch for a alum flywheel was 860.
I got the setup for around $650 with steel wheel in 1998. No problems ever behind a mild 468 (500 ft/lb or so). If I remember, Hib Halverson details this setup in the Big Block from Hell series of articles.
Thats a killer price, Parhaps I was hearing them wrong, cause I swear they stated that 860 something price was for the clutch alone. but that was for use with alunimum flywheel. Now I Guess I must have heard it wrong, cause I have never heard that there is a difference of clutch usage if it were steel or alunimum.
I spent $747.36 to get the clutches, pressure plate, aluminum flywheel, and T/O bearing as a McLeod package through Summit last year. I may have used a 10% off coupon, but I'm not sure. The aluminum flywheel is faced with steel or iron for strength.
Hmm.. I will most likely be going with this route then. Now before I make a final decision. I would like to upgrade my trannie this winter. I was thinking of the Tremec TKO that everyone has been talking about. They seem to make some pretty stout ones that can handle more torque than the richmonds. Now the question is, can the Tremec take the same clutch?
