I'm running an AC Delco high torque mini gear reduction starter. It has some serious cranking power. It weighs in at a mere 8lbs and cranks over so much stronger than my stock starter.
If you have the staggered mounting bolts (168 tooth starter ring), you can run the factory mini starter off a 1995 pickup truck (2500 series, 454 engine). Low weight, permanent magnet and gear reduction. Available at any autoparts store with a lifetime warranty. I've had mine for 2 years now and I couldn't be happier with it.
I have the Summit # SUM820323 with a 168 tooth It's made by power master. But I would recommend the Late Vette Mini made by Densio. that's what the 500+ cude guys use at the track and they never have any problems
My power master is great for a gear reduction mini. But the wiring is on the block side of the starter. So to do anything to the wiring it's faster to drop the whole starter.
The late Vette starters you can get at any dealer and they are made by the japanese electronics firm called Densio or something very close to that. My buddy has a 18:1 compression 542 ci blown alky car and he has the same starter now for three years. I just never gave it any thought before i bought mine. I had two tiltons before this trouble free power master.
I replaced my starter one year ago.. I bought a remanufactored 68' Big Block starter at Discount Auto Parts and it works perfect so far.. The big block starters are a little more heavy duty than regular small block starters.. The bolt pattern is the same..
The problem with heat soak is the spring in the solonoid not the starter. For about $4.00 you can get an optional spring from Chevy parts dept. You can also get a remote solonoid that mounts away from the starter. I have headers with a stock starter and the optional spring. No heat soak problems. :chevy
