The '78 I bought has standard Midas mufflers. I would like more rumble. My wife has a 2000 Mustang GT and it has the perfect mellowness at idle, but rumbles nicely under acceleration. I have heard that Flowmasters are just too all around noisy all the time. I have heard Dynomax is a nice mellow rumble. I would love to hear reccomendations on exhaust. If anyone knows how a 2000 Mustang GT sounds and knows of a similar exahust for Corvettes I would love to hear who makes it.
Hooker makes some good mufflers that sound great and do not cost alot. I have a set of Max flows from them on my car, and their Aerochambers are also a nice muffler.
You dont have to get the flowmaster 40's, they make other quiter models that sound real nice. On my firebird I have Flowmasters 50's. They are perfect for driving, nice low rumble that will set of car alarms but very easy on the ears.
I am replacing the exhaust on my '69 next week and I decided to go with Flowmaster DeltaFlow 50's. I found them online for $74.99 each. From what I have heard, the 50's are significantly more friendly than the 40's and with an "X" pipe (I bought a Dr. Gas "X"), you won't get the low end drone. I am looking forward to it!
I had Dynomax SuperTurbo's on an '80 Vette 350 motor (was actually in a Jeep Scrambler!) and they were real sweet sounding. You won't go wrong with them either. I just wanted to try the Flowmasters because "everybody" likes them! Plus, I would like to "kick it up a notch", but don't want to shatter the crystal.....
I have Dynomax Ultraflow polished stainless mufflers and I love them. They give a nice sound at idle and are relatively quiet at cruise with no resonance. When you put your foot in it they open up like a set of old glasspacks (which is what they are) and really roar. My wife even thinks they sound good. Here's a pic
I have FlowMaster Deltaflow 50's on my 79 and I get a LOT of compliments on the sound. The only drawback to the Deltaflow 50's is that they are a longer bodied muffler and they're more difficult to install in the stock location. Granted, you don't HAVE to install them the same as stock, but I wanted the stock look, so I went through the trouble of getting them to fit. They are fairly quiet with a nice tone on idle, and sound good when you romp on it, without the annoying drone while cruising.
All the mufflers suggested sound great I'm sure. I went with the Flowmaster 40 series and I love them. Although if I had it to do over again I'd either consider sidepipes or an undercar chambered system...that's the rumble you are talking about I think.
