I just bought the O-ring kit from VBP, and plan on tackling this soon. I've had calipers apart before, and it seems straight forward. But there were no directions, and I don't want to miss something crucial.
Re: Any pointers for O-ringing brake pistons? (joeveto)
Hi
I installed the VBP O-ring kit last winter due to aft brakes sucked air.
Installation is easy if the brake lines come off easy. They can be well corroded in and replacement might become necessary.
The kit includes the O-rings as well to separate the caliper halfs, but I didn't do this. A good cleaning with all plugs and bleeders removed should do.
Until now, the air sucking problem has not returned and I'm very pleased with the result. I also removed the springs as they seem to be useless on the tight O-rings anyway.
The pics show from left to right: Front O-ring piston , aft O-ring piston , old aft lipseal piston.
Good luck Gunther
Re: Any pointers for O-ringing brake pistons? (WESCH)
Thanks Gunther.
I looked on VBP website, and I couldn't find this kit (I am blind and can be internet retarded though)... do you remember how much the cost was? I think I might need new calipers though ($64 each at Autozone) and new disks...
Re: Any pointers for O-ringing brake pistons? (goofygrin)
I just did this conversion and Wesch was a pretty good inspiration with the pics posted-thanks Wesch if I failed to mention that before. Luckily my SS calipers were fairly new when I purchased the car but they had the OEM pistons/seals and since I needed to do the power booster and wanted the SS braided hoses, I decided to do everything while I was at it.
If you are buying new SS sleeved calipers, try to go to Checker Auto (CSK Auto) chain store and use their website. It links to Parts America and you can use their web prices for in store purchasing as they will "meet comp". This will give you great pricing along with local store delivery- no shipping fees.
Pull the old pistons out and reinstall the VBP O ringers. I also painted mine with red caliper 900 degree spray paint. Looks great. Go easy on reassembly as this paint will scratch but can be easily retouched.
My brake pedal now feels better than my 98 blazers pedal!! The VBP O-ring pistons/seals are pretty tight in the bore whereas the OEM are really loose. I really dont think it will make a difference if you leave the piston springs in or out since they really are that tight.
Make sure you torque the caliper halves properly and dont paint the mating surfaces of the 2 halves. Make sure the small o-ring between the caliper halves doesnt move on you when you assemble the calipers.

:) Goofygrin I just ordered a set of NEW,no core required ss o'ring calipers from VB&P under $500 for all 4. I don't know if I would buy calipers for my Vette from Autozone. :nono: :seeya
