WHen I bought the car it had one elctric fan on it 16 inch I think.
Does OK around town and sitting in traffic but if I drive it very far
on the hwy at 60 or 70 mph it hovers at 220 or slightly over.
The fan runs all the time also. Was thinking of finding a shroud and
going back to the original setup. Any ideas ?
That's odd, normally you hear the vice-versa of that. A shroud would definitely help. It has to do with the angle of the radiator that throws everything out of whack. The electric fan sitting at an angle probably isn't pushing much air throw the engine bay. I would try getting a hold of a shroud and clutch fan setup to see if that helps out your cooling issues any.
If it overheats at speed and not in town then the air is going around your radiator and not thru it. Make sure incoming air goes thru the fins. Air will take the path of least resistance, your job is to stop it from doing that.
Make sure your radiator to shroud seals are there, if not, get a set and install. Also make sure your car has a front air dam. These things direct the air thru the radiator and not around it. I would get a stock setup (shroud & fan w/ thermal fan clutch if AC equiped) Also get the hood to radiator seal if your's is missing. The vette gets it's cooling air from the bottom thus the reason for the air dam. Check your system and correct as needed. Also try a 180 degree thermostat and some Red Line water wetter  :D
Weell...
It could also be a flow problem, that you have a restriction in the water path (plugged up radiator). OR it could be that you're running lean. What kind of carb do you have on htere? Any mods?
I don't have an electric fan BUT I had the same symptoms. Keeping in mind that I live in FL , and we're talking about ambient temps anywhere from the high 90's to 40's and I get the same symptoms. Around town in traffic, 210-215. On the highway at 2800-3300 rpm, 220-235. Yes, I have ALL my rad surround foam, a stock radiator, shroud and fan clutch.
I just put on a Stewart stage 2, Stewart modded t-stat and changed (on Stewart's recommedation) to water + rust inhibitor. I now run at 160 in town and 170 on the hwy, with the A/C on.
I don't know if this applies in your case but a lot of sharks have lost their front spoilers, which directs airflow to the radiator at speed. They don't have any effect at stop or slow speeds but contribute a bunch to flow at hwy speeds. Another thought is ignition advance. Not enough advance can cause the engine to run hotter. Keep in mind that hp is a product of heat and at higher speeds you are generating more hp and therefore more heat.
I like what I read in your post. I have an 80 with the exact same conditions. Over the winter she always ran under 200. Now she is under around town and 20-30 degrees hotter at 3000 rpm. My thermostat is also stuck open. I may need to change my water pump as your temperatures look great, especially as hot as it is here.
Mine usually hovers just under 220. I have a 195 thermostat (stock) so the temp doesn't bother me. This car has ALWAYS run at this temp except when the radiator was clogged. It hasn't been a problem yet.
The L82 will run a little hot. Just keep your coolant filled with the right mix of antifreeze to prevent boil over. You might want to check your timing though, and make sure that the vacuum advance line is connected to the right port.
