Default [UPDATE] Header Install Part 2

Well Today was pretty much a wash out :( As soon as I get the car all jacked up it starts to rain... I beat the front Y-pipe off then called it a day, since I didn't feel like staying out in the rain.

So for my update, I'm posting more pics :D

Here's the Headers:

Here's the mufflers:

My temp exhaust pipes:

This is an X-pipe I have, not sure if the shop will be able to use it or not:

My Percy's gaskets and some bolts:

The finishing touch, new plugs/wires and wire loom that I hope will work:

You're probably wondering why i'm going to fab up a temp exhaust... Well it's cause my exhaust shop is an hour long drive. That's just a little to far for open headers. :D Also it'll allow me to set the carb/timing, to work better with the new headers so I can actually make the trip to the shop.

They're going to run pipes off the collectors into an X-pipe, then out into duals. All 2.5" pipe.

Now I just need a day or 2 of sun and dry weather, so I can freaking finish !!! :cuss

Hopefully the rain lets up this weekend and you can make some progress... or of course... finish.

Looks great. Personally I would just run open headers, but then again I run open headers on the streets all the time :D .

Are you shooting for the next nice day to finish up the work? Keep us posted.

yep. weather.com is saying PM showers tomorrow, but then they said that for today, and it rained off and on all day... Maybe i'll be able to finish pulling the old exhaust off tomorrow at the least. Then it looks like monday for the next nice day. so we'll see...

I'm really anxious to get it done and off to the exhaust shop :steering:

:iagree:
If you're concerned, just use ear plugs... That's what I did when I had to drive down to the exhaust shop about a mile away from my place.

If it was only a mile away I wouldn't mind, but I have to travel about 45-50 miles... I really don't feel like being pulled over like a thousand times...

From my experience with Chuck's unbaffled L-88, if you keep it under 2000 rpm, you'll be cool. :)

So go there at about 35-40 mph. If anyone tries to yell at you for driving slowly, rev on them. :smash:

Nice tubes Metal_Wulf. What make are they? I like that X-pipe and hoping you post pix of finished exhaust. :yesnod: How much and from who? I have an H-piping set and not sure how to place it - may whant that X-pipe too. Share the same plan for temp. plumbing until driven to the muffler shop.
Have you seen the new high flow (flow through) mufflers from Corvette Central? Sounds like there made to compete with DynoMax but no flow numbers. They make alot of the C3 exhaust systems - running system on mine.

The headers are dynomax, the x-pipe i got off ebay, and the temp pipes I got from pepboys, but most auto parts stores carries them.

The headers/mufflers/gaskets were all ordered from Jeg's.

I'll be posting more updates, and finally a finished, and there will be more pics with each one :D

I haven't seen those new mufflers. Depending on how I like the sound from my super turbos, I might be muffler shopping in the near future.

Great minds think alike. I also bought Accel wires (yellow) for over the valve covers and also bought wire looms similar to yours (although cheaper with no chevy emblem). If you get stuck by rain, I may beat you, even though I got a later start. Depends on if I feel I need to do some real work tomorrow or not, though.

So what are your plans for tackling the NJ emissions testing? I'm assuming you won't have cats on that  setup.

I'll be heading over to an inspection station soon enough and I'm worried about my stock system not passing. :( Unless we're exempt from emission b/c of vehicle age . . . I'm not familiar with the regulations on older cars here.

Goodluck!!

Well, my g/f just called, she's off work, so I'm done working on the vette for tonight. Passenger side header is on, but not tightened down yet. I'll tackle the Z-bar and driver's side tomorrow.

Unfortunately, it appears that my fuel pump may be leaking, I'm not positive though, it could just be a hose. While I was cleaning off the block due to valve cover gasket leaks, I also wiped down the fuel pump and can smell gas on the rag. However, I can't tell where it would be leaking from and can't find any holes in the two rubber hoses. That WILL be fixed before driving the vette again, even if I have to cancel the exhaust shop and set up a different date. I'm not going to deal with a fire.

The passenger side was real easy. Had to cut a small groove out of the gasket for a sensor in the head, but that was it. I don't have the Percy's gaskets so I don't know how they'll fit. Just hold the gasket up to the head and make sure all the bolt holes line up before trying to lift the header up. I was able to put the header up there, rest it on some part of the engine (not sure exactly where) then slide out from underneath and bolt everything in from the top. On the driver's side, I'll have to remove the clutch Z-bar to get the header up into the engine compartment.

Driver's side is in. It took a bit more wrestling than the passenger side because of everything that's in the way. I see from your sig that you have an auto tranny, but for anyone else reading this, see my thread about easy way to reinstall Z-bar if you have a manual transmission. Here is the link:
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=558419

Hope you're getting back to your project.

Am just now looking in the Summit book at headers. I am anxious to see and read your results. Am also looking into utilizing a set of roller rocker arms but I'm not yet satisfied I've heard enough responses to make the decision either way. Any comments or does anyone know of a forum thread where I can get more info on this? :flag :thumbs
