I just bought my first Vette (1981). The motor wasn't finished and when installing the P/S pump, I found that the pulley will not line up with the crank pulley. I checked with the dealer and I have the correct crank pulley and P/S pump, but the P/S pump bracket is no longer available. Does anyone know how to tell if I have the correct one? My P/S pump pulley is to far out to line up with the middle grove on the crank pulley, and when I put in a spacer to line up with the outer most grove the pulley hits the frame. So I assume the pulley or the bracket isn't correct. I AM NOT A MASTER MECHANIC BY ANY MEANS!!!!! :banghead: Please help!!! Thanks.
I've been dealing with thrown belts and found my pulley to have too much run out. On my 79, there are 3 grooves on the crank. The inner is for the alternator and water pump belt. The middle is for the A/C and water pump belt. The outter is crank to P/S only. if you only have 2 grooves, sounds like you are missing the outter pulley from the crank. That bolts on with 3 bolts.
I do have the third pulley, and the P/S pulley hits the frame when they are lined up. If this IS the correct P/S pulley, then maybe I have a problem with how the crank pulley is mounted or maybe the entire motor isn't sitting properly after installation. That would SUCK!!!!
I have a similar problem, but I have a 2 groove crank pulley, and it looks like a 3rd groove will line up right. You have a 3 groove and still feel the need to go forward with the PS pulley. That seems wrong.
Is your bracket the stock bracket that mounts to the engine block and with a strap that catches the front of the motor mount?
You can get factory style brackets from Zip and most of the other houses.
Yes, that is the P/S pump bracket I have. If I mount the pump flush to the block, the pulley is still to far forward to line up with the center crank pulley groove. I have no choice but to go to the outer most crank pulley groove. So I put in spacers to reach the outer most groove but the the P/S pulley hits the frame. Would a smaller P/S pulley reduce the performance of the power steering very much?
I know on mine there is VERY little clearance between the pulley and the frame. Barley enough room to squeeez/walk the belt between the frame and pulley. My PS pump is out of the car right now as I have a new one on order with a new pulley. The old pulley is 6 5/8 " in diameter, if that helps.
I just had to have new motor mounts put in. Afterwards I could see where the lip of the pulley had worn a groove in the frame when the engine must've either leaned over from torque or around a turn. I think it bent my pulley as I have run out in it now, so I am ordering a new one from ZIP. The old motor mounts weren't so bad that the untrained eye would see it, yet it didn't take much sag to let the pulley hit the frame. It's a little too close for my taste, but I suppose it works.
