Since the center console is out and I want to pull the gauge cluster out to rebuild the clock and add some stereo wiring, I am wanting to fix the ammeter too. Is there a way to test it to ensure that is the problem?
I would say put 12v to one terminal and a load on the other. (Starter, lights, etc. The bigger the load the more the movement on the needle. Reverse the terminals and the movement will go the other way.
My 71 ammeter problem was a wire somewhere down the line, didn't fix it....
And if you want to see how accurate your ammeter is you can do the following. Do what LAvetteman said to do but also connect a multimeter's ammeter in series with your car's ammeter.
Oh and don't forget to keep the current below the level of your multimeter's fuse rating.
