Okay, so why did they waste money on unneeded guideplates instead of giving us better heads? Inquiring minds want to know!

ALL L82s had the 2.02 valve heads. But the same casting number was used for the L48 heads but with small valves. Has been the same since the '70 LT1, same head casting but different valve sizes.

L-82 had guideplates though not needed. Different castings no. have been used, depends on yr.

Also, doesn't the presence of the guideplates mean you can't use the umbrella type valve seals?

It shouldn't be a problem because the seals are under the valve springs. The guideplates are "north" of the springs, from the rocker studs to above the pushrod holes.
