Pushrod guideplates on an L82?
I removed one of my valve covers in preparation for adjusting the valves. And lo! I beheld a set of pushrod guideplates.
Correct me if I'm wrong here, but a stock '79 L82 doesn't have guideplates. I can't see any markings on the rockers, so I'm not sure what their ratio is.
Any guesses as to what's going on here?

Re: Pushrod guideplates on an L82? (Greg)
If your asking if they are stock, no - they are not (at least that is what I have been told)
try and I.D. the rocker arms to find out what ratio you have. Maybe compare yours with a known 1.6 or 1.5 to see which one it is.
I wonder if someone machined your stock heads and are using 1.6 ratio arms on them.

Casting number (I think) is 462624. There is also a big "GM" cast on the head.

This casting number is the stock number. Still a numbers-matching engine, despite some apparent tweaks...

Re: Pushrod guideplates on an L82? (Roscoe's C3's)
weird, 462624 heads have tiny pushrod holes, you won't need guide plates with those, unless someone hogged out the holes in the head.

Wow !! Sounds like a lot of the L-82 guys are saying they have guideplates.
I was under the impression that no GM smallblock ever used them from the factory.

Re: Pushrod guideplates on an L82? (BSeery)
yes, they are the 76cc 1,94 x 1,5 thin casting open chamber design smog heads. Absolutely the worst head ever produced by GM. Restrictive, weak, poor chamber design,.. JUNK.

Don't beat around the bush.....
Tell us what you
REALLY think !! :jester
I agree, late model cheap casting smog heads. A set of newer / better heads would be a good start if you want to build some HP.
Nice to know what the L-82's had on them for cylinder heads now. I am disapointed in GM for using this casting when there was much better to be had in the parts bin. I would expect this on a L-48 but not a L-82.

All L-82 motors came from the factory with 2.02/1.60 valves, screw in studs and guideplates. The castings are the same

The good: large valves, guideplates
The bad: large volume smog heads
The ugly: junk castings, prone to cracking
