Re: carburetor rebuild kit??? (HcDave1)
Best quality kits right now are the Echlin (NAPA) kits. Be sure to also replace your float with a correct NitroFill float (not a brass float), also available from Echlin. Test your choke pulloff and replace it, too, if it's bad (common problem).
Send it to Lars. Best $150-175 you will spend and he even performance tests on his engine (if feasable). Give him your engine parameters and he can even facilitate the re-jetting adjustment. Lars also provides detailed setup/tuning instructions.
Lars rebuilt my carb in 2002. I'm a happy customer.
get the kit, and do it yourself. theres not a million pieces in a carbeurator, but there is a hundred. jsut take your time, watch how it comes apart, do it on a large piece of white paper. put the pieces in the order that you disassembled them. Clean every little piece very well, carb cleaner is good, check your float valve, (blow in the whole and lift the float, should stop flow) and reassemble with new parts in kit. I've done it a few times, I'm no carbeuretor specialist but a rebuild is simple.
The reason I recommend Lars is his ability to set the float level and replace/tune the jetting for your specific combination. He didn't just rebuild my carb. He identified missing/broken/wrong parts and replaced them (in addition to the std rebuild kit). And the advice and follow-on customer service is unparalleled (free jet/metering rod exchange 'program', free phone support and great documentation).
I'd send it to him if I had to do it over again; no hesitation (mine or the carbs ). :D
