Default Frame interchangablity??

I want to to confirm that that 79 frame is the same as a 1975. These urethane bumper cars are new to me. I am used to dealing in the chrome bumper stuff. Anyway i am about o buy a 79 frame but i want to make sure it will work without mods

When I replaced mine in the spring of 1998, no one made a new 73-77 frame. I think there is one now, but I forget who makes it. We bought a 78-82 frame and used the old 77 rear-most cross-member in the new frame to make it right for the 77 body. Worked, but required fabrication & welding skills.

The rear crossmember where the differential mounts is different. you would need to cut the crossmember off of both frames and switch them around, or use the later aluminum differential mount with the newer frame and throw the body on it that way.

?? the aluminium diff w/ carrier came in 80, not in 79. 79 still uses the iron Dana 44 w/ the separate cross bar in the rear.

If you use the later model frame, the transmission crossmember w/ 2 holes for exhaust is NOT bolt in. The bolts on the underside of the frame rails meet up, the ears on the sides however need to be extended by 1/2 inch or so and redrilled.

Actually i made a typing boobo. It is a 1978 frame. Hey Marck, i am going to send you the pictures of this car for the website project area. I just got it up on the body dolly at the shop yesterday. I am going to start snapping pictures of the progress.

The only real difference I saw was on the rear upper part of the frame, how they welded an angled support member to keep the frame more rigid.

You know, that could be right. I guess I always thought that the 78-82 frames were all the same, but I don't know that for a fact. Now that you bring it up it does seem that I remember reading somewhere that the diff was changed in 80'.

The gas tanks were different so there could be some tank mounting differences but don't think that would cause any real problems.

Yes, the aluminium differential was first featured in 1980 so 80-82 frames are different from the others in that area too. Also, the tranny crossmember was changed to a dimpled one instead of the one w/ 2 holes.
