Is anyone running with this combo? I'm very close to buying my first Corvette.. a 72 or 73 and want to put this combo on. I'm concerned about the engine fires thing and want to prevent it as much as possible. I already have the steel fuel lines on the list and want to get as much as I can to prevent problems and increase performance.
i run the Performer intake with the 1406 (?) carb...
i like the performance...generaly...
BUT...
OCATIONALY when i take off from a dead stop it bogs down...
it did this a lot when i put the 1st one on so i returned it for another one and this one does it too only not as often...
id say it happens once every few days...(daily driver)

I have the same combo on my 72:cheers: You may want to check (1)the accelerator pump setting (2) fuel pressure could be a tad high.
OneHotV6, As for fires  There's no more concern with the Edelbrock than any other carb. Just make sure your connections are ok
Rule #1: For the first 6 months, do NOTHING. No mods, no nothing. Just necessary repairs. Fires are caused by poorly tuned carburetors (of any brand) and overall poor maintenance.
Many people regret their initial mods, so be patient :yesnod:
I totally agree with the post about waiting on mods... I bought the vette and 2 weeks later started mods. I put on the Edelbrock 600 cfm carb, performer manifold and lots of other pieces including taking the block to the machine shop and new pistons. NOW...I wish I had waited and done some things different. Do whats necessary, but take your time.
my 02 cents
Thanks for the replies... I plan on doing some minor body mods first and making sure all the fuel lines and carb are in good working condition. I've had experiences with Q-Jets before and want to steer away from them. I'm mainly looking for a carb that I don't have to fool around with much just to drive the car.
I've got a Performer/600CFM combo, and its fanstastic-no problems here. The carb, because you seem a bit apprehensive and are steering clear of QuadraJunks :p: is PN 1406, with an electric choke and vacuum secondaries. For my first carb, Edelbrock has been superb in providing tech support, and they come with a great instructional booklet on the tuning of it. I highly recommend it. Just my two....Good luck whichever way you go
I ran that combo and it was okay..When I started to mod the engine I went with the Speed Demon 650 and it is Awesome. I had bog problems with the edelbrock 600 as well.

The only Q-jets that you have to fool around with are the genric rebuilt ones OR the Q-jets rebuilt by Holley. A NEW Q-jet by Edelbrock will work great for years. My Original 69 carb still works fine. No bogs, no stumbles, the choke works like it's supposed to.
If the engine is otherwise mostly stock, you probably won't get much benefit from changing to a different type of carb. For the same cost or less, a cam swap or exhaust mods will probably give a lot more of a performance increase. I think the Q-jet's bad rep has a lot to do with most of them being old and carbs do wear out. The same applies to Holley's or any other carb. I'm not saying that you won't possibly find a few extra ponies from a carb swap, I just think they'll be very expensive ponies if you do.
Get a new Cam, headers, etc... I put a new Edlebrock on mine and it was great, but I was replacing a 20+ year old Carb. Best mods were the Cam, 700R4 and headers with dual
Well, the Q-Jet I had was on a 76 Olds and I always had problems with the choke. I always had to set the damn thing when the seasons changed. That was a PITA and want something that has good driveability and the only time I want to pop the hood is when I mod it or checking the oil, etc. not everyother day when the temp changes. The choke was temp controlled so maybe that had something to do with why it never worked properly..
My mod list so far consists of Hooker headers and side pipes, a new carb (depending on the condition of the one on there), maybe a manifold and maybe a cam.. depending on how choppy I want the idle. :D
