Apparently my car doesn't want to go to Bowling Green this week. Get the new cam in, fire it up...radiator leak. Get that back out & fixed...go for a test drive....Water Pump leak!!
Ok, I'm sure it's a bad seal somewhere inside, but it's leaking out of a hole on the underside of the nose of the pump. Why is that hole there??? I think I'd find someplace else to put a hole basides in the water pump!!
UGH!! I hope I can get a generic small block pump to work.
That's the "Weap hole" it's there to let you let you know when there is an internal seal failure instead of forcing the coolent out the outer bearing and washing out all the grease and causing the pump to fail. Also if it leaked out the bearing the water would be thrown everywhere by the pully and the leak would be difficult to track down.

Thanks Snowman, I always wondered about that hole too.
While you may be tempted to drive your car with only a drip or two coming out of the weep hole, let me tell you, fix it now. My water pump was dribbling and I put the car in for the night. Next morning, I fired it up and the entire seal let loose. If I had continued to drive, I might have ruined the engine.

This is anything but a drip or 2. I put coolant in the reservoir and it pours right out the bottom of the pump.
I'll be getting a new pump today.
And I can see how it would be beneficial to keep the grease in the bearing and all that, but let me tell you, that is one tough leak to find when it drips down onto the balancer and gets blown all over by the fan!
