I'm interested in a roller cam for my 454, as I think my motor just ate another cam and lifters set. I will find out when I have time to tear it down, if it is the cam. But, I'm just looking for good possibilities. I'd like the experience with the roller cam in my 454 before I go and rebuild my 427.
I've run a roller cam in a couple small blocks and loved them. I've now moved up to Big Blocks and I'm currently building a 427. I'm going with comp cams #11-460-8 hyd. roller. The duration at .050 is 244/244 with .612 lift (intake and exhaust) and 110 degree lobe center. Comp cams description of it says "street / strip 10:1+ compression, 3000 stall, 4.10 gears, aftermarket intake and headers. Very rough idle"
I only have 3.55 gears but it is going to be bolted up to a 700R4 trans. The cam might be a little big for a daily driver but for perfect for a weekend street/strip car!!! :chevy
What kind of rev-range are you looking at with that cam? I am getting a custom cam for use with my AFR 305 heads (mine is already a hyd. roller now). I'm concerned with getting something too large that will put the peak HP at too high of an rpm b/c I know hyd. rollers are rpm limited due to their weight. If I was gonna spin it to 7k, I'd opt for a solid valvetrain.
Sorry if this is considered hijacking the thread...not intended, and maybe this will help. The more info, the better!
I am running a comp cams solid roller grind number 288A-R10. Gross lift is .622 intake and exhaust, 244 duration at .050 and 110 lobe seperation. I have been very pleased with this cam for daily street use and ocaisional drag strip duty. I started with a hydraulic roller but had a lot of trouble with valve float and broken valve springs.
