I just bought some "blue" interior dye from Corvette America. I tested it on one of my interior door handle surrounds, and it came out a little more grey than the original dark blue color that the other parts have.
I cleaned the part, used the primer, and then used the dye. Did I do something wrong, or should I try something else? Should I try another brand?
I have used quite a bit of the Corvette America [Bright Blue] die in both spray cans and with a spray gun (I bought a Quart). The results were extremely close to the existing original pieces such that after I cleaned it all up, it looks great.
I did find that if you spray it too dry, the metallic "floats" and it will be VERY diferent looking. Don't spray from too far away, but do NOT puddle it.
Your original interior colors have most likely changed somewhat from the day the car was built just due to sunlight exposure and age. To get a perfect match you would probably need to dye the entire interior (which is what I just did on my 75)
Maybe I didn't shake it up enough. I "shined" it a bit with armor-all, and that made it a little darker... I will try the passenger side surround tonight and see what happens.
Remember you are trying to match a can of paint with a part made 20+ years ago. Like stated the color will change over time and it would be almost impossible to match the new paint to the color of the paint used 20+ years ago. I did mine and I have 3 diff shades of med saddle but you really have to look at it closely to really see a diff.
Well, I solved my problem. I simply took the part off again, cleaned it good, and put on 2 more coats. The paint darkened to a perfect match. I did the other side too. I started with cleaning, primer, and then 3 thin coats of color. Looks like brand new. I'm sad I that all I have left to "dye" is the center of the steering wheel...
