what are your opinions on a K&N filter? should I keep the stock air cleaner assembly on my 79 and use a K&N, or buy a new air cleaner, rip off all the ducting, and get a K&N.........i'm looking for maximum airflow
I like my K&N very much. Getting a new intake should increase air flow, but I doubt your car would need more air. The reason I got a new intake was because it lookes way cool.
Sucking in more air that is super heated may not yeild any more power than sucking in less air that is cooler. You can use a K&N with your stock set up.
I use a K&N with the stock air cleaner assembly on my '81. The filter definitely makes a difference in performance.
I have a K&N on my Harley, too. When it's time to clean the filters, I do the both (car/bike) at the same time. I've found it's better to wash the filter and allow it to air dry overnight before spraying it with oil.

Just my $0.02, I did a K&N, cap and rotor, new wires and plugs, rebuilt carb, and new intake gasket. After all done and said (over a period of 2 weeks) Huge difference. From a dead stop, when I drop the hammer, car will fishtail and peel, pretty good considering I THINK it's all factory other than headers.
