As I promised earlier, I thought I'd give an update on my engine swap. I am still waiting for Mark (at AR Racing http://www.maxhorsepower.com) to put the finishing touches on my new 383, but while waiting I thought I'd get to work pulling the old engine. I'll have a question or two to post tomorrow after resting, but for now, I thought I'd post a pic of my dad and I after finishing pulling the engine tonight (we started on Sunday).
I still have a long road ahead of me before putting in the new engine as I'd like to replace the vacuum lines, coolant hoses, and clean up the engine compartment, not to mention lots of other little things like some a-arm bushings that I swear I replaced, but look to be bad now. I've gotta keep better records
If you have never done an engine swap you will feel a great rush when you fire that bad up for the first. the feeling of accomplishment is overwhelming!
Hope you guys have clean hands. :) :) I see you are both touching the paint. Like someone else said nice father son shot. Reminds me of doing that a few times with my son.
I have one priceless shot at home on the fridge of my father, myself, my son and his son all doing a cam swap on my father's car. Priceless picture that can never be taken again.
That just brought back a sad memory
Have a nice day.
Thanks for all of the positive comments everyone. I am really looking forward to firing up the new engine once I get it. At this point I think the sweet sound of a 383 with open headers at 2000 RPM for 20 minutes will be well worth all the effort!

Greasy paw prints are all over the front of the car... It's getting a repaint :yesnod: since the current paint is in much worse shape than you could imagine from the pics... At my father's suggestion (he likes to touch stuff with greasy hands), I'm finishing the major stuff like the engine swap before putting on new paint. Makes life so much easier when you are constantly worried about a bit of dirt...
Four generations, that is priceless. For now it's just myself and my father, both muddling our way through things... I'm considering adding a little helper to the list in the next couple of years, but I'm still undecided about that :D
dath, i'm doing the same thing you are...just a little ahead. Check out my website below, you might find it useful. Try the 383 Install pages. There's a lot more custom work ahead of you than you think, trust me! Mark puts on some kind of different balancer that a lot of us with his engines have had some trouble with. It's about 1/8" thinner and the pulleys won't quite line up. Just keep it in mind and do a mock up of all the accessories, headers, plugs, etc before you put it in. You may find some of the things don't work or fit anymore. My website is below my sig.
That is one nice looking engine. Mine isn't quite as flashy (It has dart iron eagle heads), but it should put out about the same power with the extra exhaust porting I had Mark do. Where did you get the pulleys and if you don't mind my asking, what was the price? I'm going to need a new bracket for my alternator since it looks like bubba welded my original one back together after he must have over tightened it and broke it  I think I ought to put on a new water pump as my old one couldn't have a whole lot of life left in it based on what the radiator fluid looked like a year ago when I flushed it... Looked like nobody had ever bothered to flush it, though my radiator does look new, so I gave it a good flushing then and will give it another before putting in the new engine...
I really want to run a serpentine setup, but I do not want to spend the money to do it at this point, though replacing my pulleys will probably cost a bit as well... Thanks for the link to your site, looks like your swap went really well. Bet you can't wait to smoke the tires :D
I got the pulleys off of ebay for fairly cheap. I bought each one seperately. They are'nt anything cool like March pulleys but they look good and we'll see how well they work.
I'll IM you on the price.
And yes, I can't wait to be shopping for some more tires. :D
Now is a good time to seal any gaps around your heater box to help keep out the extra heat!
Not to mention fix the leak that is probably getting to the interior somewhere around the heater box :) You'll have to come by for a beer and to see this thing. Maybe when the new engine arrives?
Great going! I'm in the middle of a swap on mine right now too, another father son thing. I'm taking this time to tackle the vacuum system on mine as well, and clean and paint the engine compartment. I'm envious of your nice new AR engine, especially having spent the last few days solid scrubbing scraping wiping and such on this greasy iron thing that's going in mine. Good luck with the rest of your project!
Yep. I've got to clean up my old engine as well since I'd like to sell it to someone in reasonably clean and non-leaking/working order. It was fine when I pulled it, but it has a couple of leaks that really need fixing... I just talked to Mark today and my engine is done, just needs to put the intake back on it. He'll be setting up a carb for me and sending me a NOS kit and a Carter fuel pump. This is so exciting!
You're gonna love riding a corvette with the power it should have. I change my engine a mounth ago and now it's rolling.
I hope so. I'm really looking forward to this. I can't believe how excited I am about it. I'll just have to learn how to stay off of the gas pedal too much :D Darn that lead foot!
