Default This SUCKS!

The hot water cut off valve on my '79 heater system doesn't seem to work, and my cool air is not as cool as it could be..... when i pulled off the vacuum pipe which operates it there doesn't seem to be any 'SUCK', no matter what position the heater controls are in.
Does anyone know where tha vacuum source for this pipe is? .. the pipe goes through behind the dash somewhere, but it does not seem to be any of the vacuum pipes which plug into the heater controls (i've tried sucking on them!!!!)

... any clues???

check to see if you get vacuum at the heater controls, I believe it is either the all Black line or one with a white stripe. The green stripe and orange go to the vents. There is also a line that goes to the heater box on the interior, If you remove your glove box you should see the lines. I belive the main vacuum sorce is on the left side of the engine the two other lines that go into the fire wall operate the hot water shut off, as you already know and the other oprerates a vacuum operated door which I believe is for outside air inlet. The plastic lines ar notorious for cracking and breaking. I went through and fixed all mine over the winter. It is a real pain to find vacuum leaks in them. Depending on the vacuum source you may not see any vacuum at idle. If I am not mistaken, they are hooked to a manifold vacuum source, or a temperature operated vacuum switch, which receives manifold vacuum. I hope this help some. I would try and find a manual that shows a vacuum diagram. Also some catalogs show the heater vacuum line layout. That may help also.

The line to the water valve comes from the vac switch on top of the heater box behind the glove compartment. You should have vaccum on the other line attached to this switch.
If you do, check to see that the switch is fully depressed when the heater core is operated. If not, you can adjust the throw on the cable with the plastic turnbuckle that is on the passenger side console panel just under the radio. This adjustment controls hot air flow into the system. Mis-adjustment causes two heat problems: Water valve doesn't shut off - Hot air is allowed into cabin.
If you go with a manual shut off valve, the switch on top of the heater box is not needed and you can cap off the vac lines.
Hope that helps!
Ed
