I have a 1974 L82 with a proper year Rochester quadra-jet carb (rebuilt by Holley). When I turn on the A/C, the rpms reduce from 900 to about 550 and the car stalls. Does anyone have any idea what makes the carb adjust for the extra drag of the A/C compressor?
I have reviewed the service manual and the only info I can find relates to the "hot idle compensator" installed in the rear of the carb on all factor air cars to bleed more air into the mixture to compensate for hotter weather. Although Holley says that my carb is correct for 74, the hot idle compensator slot is vacant in the rear of the carb.
Any thoughts would be appreciated since it gets hot here in Florida and I would like to use the A/C.
I have the "idle stop solenoid" on the carb, but it is electrically operated by the ignition and not by the a/c switch. Even with the idle stop solenoid set at 900 rpms, it still decreases when the a/c switch is turned on.
I am not sure what your exact problem is but I can tell you that Holley's Q-jet rebulids are absolute junk. They have succeded in making a good carb into the worst possible unit. In the early versions they clip the pin from the bottom of the power piston creating a severe drivability problem, (Terrible throttle response). Rebuilt carbs in general aren't know to be great but Holley's are the worst of the bunch. I'd get "new" Edelbrock Q jet , bolt it on and enjoy your ride.
