I have a friend with a 69 4 speed small block. He has an intermittent problem with his starter. The starter runs when the ignition key is turned to run, but it stops when it goes to the start position. This is totally bypassing the clutch saftey switch. We have replaced the ignition switch, the starter motor and check the wiring.
The car's problem is intermittent, sometimes it works textbook, other times it does it. Anyone have a suggestion ?
My guess, bad starter solinoid. Next time its starts in the run position, check the voltage of the wire going to the solinoid.
You should have three connecttions on the solinoid:
1. LINE, big cable from the battery.
2. LOAD, strap going into the actual starter motor.
3. SIGNAL, small wire from wiring harness.
You should have 12 volts in the SIGNAL wire in the start position only, with the clutch depressed. If you have 12v in the run position than the problem is elsewhere, but I doubt that.
