Working on my '77. Under the car, bolted to the center link is a power steering hydraulic cylinder that has a shaft that protrudes out towards the drivers side of the car. It's the part that actually shoves the linkage back and forth to add the "power" to the power steering. The end of that shaft is bolted to a bracket, which is bolted to the frame. There are nuts welded inside the frame, so the braket is bolted to those.
Problem is that on my car the bracket has pulled some of the bolts completely through the frame, leaving nothing but holes there. Has anyone run into this before? I'm clueless as to how to fix it. And I can't drive the car without it. Any suggestions at all would help.
Re: Problem With Power Steering Bracket - HELP (Wendell Allen)
According to my 1976 AIM manual (and I am sure that your 1977 is the same), you should NOT have plain bolts holding your ram bracket to the frame. There should be two plates with two bolts welded to each plate that should extend down through the frame in that location.
Zip Products has the plate and bolts listed as:
SC-589 Ram Bracket Reiforcements w/nuts $10.50 set
page 217 of their 2003 catalogue.
I am not sure what (set) means. I would think that you will need two of the above parts.
From your description, Bubba attached your ram bracket to the frame with just nuts and bolts. If you are lucky, the correct ram bracket reinforcements will span the holes where the bolts tore through the frame and you are back in business. Otherwise, you are going to need to weld a patch to the frame to strengthen the attachment points for the new reinforcements.

Two bolts on a plate. The plate is 1/2 inch by maybe 3 inches with the bolts pressed through the ends. The "set" consisted of one plate, two washers and two nuts.
