The '76's have the good looks and the handling that all C3's have but , as with all American cars from the early '70s on up for quite a few years, they were not bestowed by the factory with a knockout punch in the horsepower area. Certainly a very pleasant machine to own and operate. Plenty of guys are satisfied with the stock hp. For the rest, the horsepower "problem" is easily cured.
I've done my '76 up to approx 400hp. I am very happy with it.
I've had a 76 L-48 for 3 years now, with the automatic tranny. (also 176K on the clock with original motor)
I don't know about the 0-60 data, but I could get around 16 mpg in town on decent gas and with fairly conservative driving....
I have been pretty happy with my 76, myself, but it WAS my first Vette, so maybe I am just being biased.
(Now I also own a 78).
Pullin' 350HP and just over 400 ft/lbs with my mildly (Cam, heads, headers) motored '76. It was a stock L-48 (same engines that went into Station Wagons, etc) and would barely pull the hat off of your head! One of the Dogs of the C-3 era to be sure, but a few well spent bucks will put you rite up there, performance wise anyway, with the earlier chrome bumper boys, and a lot cheaper too! GOOD LUCK!
