Hi All. Over the past few days I have noticed a screaching noise when accelerating quickly in first gear. The noise, which sounds like an old brake pad grinding into the rotor, lasts about a second before it shifts into second. The first couple of times it happened I thought it was the horn from some small car. Any ideas? This is on a 79 L-48 with auto. Engine is original and was rebuilt about 25,000 miles ago. Fluid on the original tranny, which was inspected and declared OK during the rebuild, looks pink and full as well. Otherwise tranny is the way it was when it rolled off the line. 160,000 miles on the car. Thanks for any input!
I haven't a clue, but I'll bump you up to the top. I assume this noise is coming from the tranny. When you said screaching, the first things that came to my mind are belts, A/C compressor, pumps, etc. But if it only happens in first and is coming from the area of the tranny....
I think it's the belts also. Check step by tep. The first thing I would do is turn the steering wheel from one side to the other. Then check the a/c at different engine rpm's. Make sure that you have all of the brackets on your belt driven accessories. If everything looks good, spray some belt dressing on the belts-I just use WD-40. If the belts still squeak, then I'd check to see if the screaching happens at the same rpm in other gears.

Also many people dont realize it but the compresor operates with the climate controll in the defrost position. when the compressor is running there is a greater drag and the belt is more likely to slip. Just mentioning this in case the noise is happening with the a/c on or when the defrost pasition is selected.
Rev it up in park (with the AC however you have it when it screeches) to the rpm where it makes the noise (quickly, cause if you just ease up there it might not do it). If it still makes the noise, you've totally eliminated the tranny.

Re: Screaching Noise (79C3)
Hate to put a downer on this thread. Check the belts, that would show up with the car standing still when revved hard.
But, it sounds very similar to the noise that mine made when he first gear in the trans needed some work..... Sounded like the exhaust of something metal is hitting, or scraping along the ground under hard acceleration? Need new "clutch bands". Also might be worth looking at the fan shroud. If the fan was catching that under acceleration it could be engine mount related?
Another thing to check is the engine rubber support. I had a similar noise when accelerating and an engine rubber mount had seperated. The noise was from the fan hitting the shroud. To check this, open your hood, put it in gear with the brake and accelerate. If it's the problem, the engine will lift.
