Default shifer rebuild

The shifter in this car needs a rebuild. The Reverse Blocking rod is missing and you need to muscle and wiggle it to get to the reverse shifter slot. Once in the slot it moves easily into gear. I bought a full rebuild kit but have not put it in yet. How hard is this to set up and can it be disassembled in the car? How much can you get at from the hole in the floor? I have a welded exhaust system and would like to avoid griniding that off if possible.

Is it a manual or an auto? I'm kinda facing the same problem and I'd like to know too, I've practically had to dropkick the shifter into park a few times.

Did you just try to adjust the one that's in there now?
I had the same problem in my car when I got it, I
adjusted it, and no more of that problem

Having just removed my transmission and removed the shifter and rebuilt both, I would say there is no way to disassemble the shifter in the car. You should be able to remove the shifter without too much trouble, though the left side intermediate pipe will restrict access to the lower shifter to bracket bolt.

Hi Adam:
Our company manufactures the new 4-spd shifters for all 64-81 models as well as the various rebuild kits. If you bought a complete rebuild kit (not just a cosmetic kit), then you will have to remove it from the car. 4-spd shifters are not overly complicated, but do require a little patience if you have never rebuilt one before.

It is hard to say for sure, but problems locating nuetral or moving freely between gears is almost always a shifter linkage adjustment issue.

Let me know if we can be of any help while you are rebuilding your shifter.

My shifter would lock in second gear, so I removed, lubed, and realigned the entire shifter assembly. On my car, it required dropping the driver side exhaust (2.5" chambered). Now it shifts smooth as a warm knife through butter.

The guy who sold me the car told me it needed a shifter. After driving the car last fall I think it shifts fine. The problem has been getting it in reverse. You have to push (muscle) and wiggle it until it pops into the reverse track. It comes back out with no problem. Ialso found the reverse blocking rod was missing making first hard to get sometimes. I bought the full rebuild kit from CC to make sure I had whatever I might need. From your suggestions it looks like the revese rod needs adjusting to line the track up with the others. I have a new blocking rod in the kit. It would be nice to have something go easy. Thanks everyone.

Hi Steve:
We have a complete rebuild kit available that sells for $57. It comes with everything you need to completely rebuild the unit. The only thing you may need to do would be rechrome the shaft. We can also do it for you, which would include plating the shaft, for $129. When we rebuild a shifter, if you send the linkage, we will go through it at no extra charge. Check out our website at http://www.volvette.com. The part number for your shifter is SH005P.

If you need any help regarding your shifter, email me at adam@volvette.com

Both of your problems (getting into and out of reverse) are most likely due to a misalignment on neautral. Disconnect the linkage rod from the levers at the trans. Make sure the trans in in neutral and get the shifter levers at the base of the shifter aligned so that neutral is smooth and does not rake at any point. Then adjust the linkage to the levers on the trans without moving the shifter. It is tedeous, but not difficult. If you have slop in either the shifter or linkage, rebuild or replace the necessary components. Complete shifters are $189 and a linkage kit is $69.

I don't mean to solicit, only trying to help.

I have a Hurst 4 spd and my shifter is out of the car now during a clutch change. How do I lube this thing, and with what? Thanx

I agree. White lithium greese is the way to go. That is what is used on all of the shifters when they are new.

My 1968 4-speed, for 15 years would sometimes stick in gear and I would have to climb under the car to correct it. During my frame off I disassembled the shifter assemble and found the problem. I kind of found it by accident, the shifter housing on the one end that has a hole that is tack welded had broken loose. Re-welded the housing, installed a major rebuild kit I got from Volunteer Vettes and it works great.

I worked on the shifter this weekend and the adjustment was definitely the problem. As soon as I loosened the linkage it went easily into reverse. I put in the new reverse lockout rod and there is no more catching between tracks going into first. This is what I love about the forum. Getting down to the real problem. The person who sold me this car was convinced the shifter was no good and recommend $350 for a hurst when all it needed was some adjustment.
