Replacing shifter for "77 4-speed
Someone here recommended that I replace the stock shifter on my 1977 4-speed 'Vette with a higher performance shifter. Can someone offer suggestions on: 1) Why? 2) Which brand should I consider 3)Is this an easy "do it yourself" fix or do I need a mechanic?

If you drag race then get a Hurst shifter. They have more positive shifts then the stock. One thing to remember, the stock shifter if mounted to the frame while the Hurst mounts to the transmission side. This gives the Hurst better feel and more positive changes but also transmits more vibrations. The stock shifter is very good for street use. In fact most road racers use the stock shifter over the Hurst.

I recently replaced my Hurst comp plus shifter with the stock shifter. The throw is longer..but it shifts easier. The biggest difference is in noise inside the car. The GM shifter made the car seem like a new car compared. I didn't realize how much noise was really being transmitted into the car. For me, this was a good thing. The Hurst shifter would be better if you are into performance vs. originality and creature comforts. :steering:
