Fuel pump gasket
Well while under the car pulling my speedo gear out of the trans I looked up front and found oil all over the bottom of my fuel pump.:mad I guess the gasket could be leaking. Is that easy to replace? I don't have air, so at least that's not in the way. Hints to avoid trouble would be great.
place about a 2" bolt (3/8" -16) in hole in the front of block next to the fuel pump (top hole; there will be a bolt in there already). Tighten enough to hold the push rod in place. Then remove the four bolts and pull it out far enough to get to the gaskets. You need two - one on either side of the plate. With luck you won't have to remove the hoses and have gas all over everything.
If it's a big block, it's easier. Just take out the plug below and use something thin like a hacksaw blade to push the rod up while you put the pump lever in under it. Save yourself some grief and use spray-on gasket adhesive to stick the gasket to the pump before you try to put it all together.
Hey, Gary. Just tried to post & that electrical storm we're having just zapped me right out of there.
Nope, haven't gotten it running. Very bummed. Especially since I'm headed out of town & can't work on it again until right before the tuning party w/Lars. And I already paid Page, dammit!
Followed Lars's distributor R&R to get it to TDC, pointed the rotor at the #1 plug wire, used a multimeter to get it right at the point where the points open, turned it over and got nothing except spinning and spit back through the carb. Which means to me that I've still got the timing screwed up somehow, since it's got fuel and a good spark. I just don't know how. :banghead: May have to get it towed and let the shop look at it so I can make the tuning party. Ah, well, such is life with a C3, I guess.
BTW, when you gonna have your "putting the body back on the '66 party"? :D

Sounds like you got it 180 degrees of. I like to pull the valve cover (might be a tall task for you with all teh factorty crap) and watch the #1 intake go up and then start to go down, once that happens I watch for the timing line to come around on the balancer then set it at 0. One thing to consider is the balancer outer ring might have slipped and you are out of wack with your timing.

I used a thin coat of black sillycone along with the paper gaskets.

That dog'll hunt too, though I like the spray on stuff because you get instant tack & don't have to wait for the silicone to set up.
Fevre--I'm worried about it being the balancer ring. I pulled the #1 plug and turned the car over until I got the timing mark at the same time that I felt compression, so I'm pretty sure I don't have it 180 out. I'll pull the valve cover next just to be 100% certain. I sure hope it's not the balancer--looks like it'd be a beee-atch to R&R.
74 Vert--sorry about highjacking your thread!
