I'd still drill holes for them just to keep them from slip sliding. (I've seen it happen) You wouldn't have to attach anything to the posts. Just make the holes and push the posts through.
Holes are permanent.....tape is too (almost). I work for a GM Final Assembly Plant in MI, and almost all of the emblems go on w/tape only. The Pins are for location only. I just put a set of L-48 Emblems on my '76 (since I'm makin abt 350 HP now....LOL) and ground the pins flat. Sealed them with RTV, & trimmed the excess. They look great, arent goin' anywhere, and there are no PERMANENT holes in my Hood........... :D
I put new emblems on mine and I just stuck the three posts through the existing holes and the tape held them on. I did not use nuts or anything on the backside of the posts. They have been on for a year now.
After I had my bodywork and paint done and had the car home and was ready to put everything back on I realized the bodyshop guys filled in those holes on one side. (but not the other   ) Rather than deal with taking the car back I just snapped the posts off and eyeballed it and stuck that side on with just the tape. It's been there two years so far.
