I got an estimate to repaint my '79 for $3362.
It is a Dupont paint that comes with an 11 year warranty, 8 of which are 100% coverage for materials & labor.
The bumpers will be removed and painted separately and things like mirrors, emblems, etc will be removed too.
A painter once told me that "a paint job can only be as good as the prep job".
Are they going to be doing good prep job? Whole car needs to be sanded, primered, sanded again to find high/low spots, ect...
If so then thats a pretty good price.
Yeah... he spent about 5 minutes expalining the prep job to me. He really sounded like he knew what he was talking about. And hell, if it's warranted for 11 years, if it gets ugly in a year, I'll bring it back!
If you are preping it, put a dark color primer down first, sand it with 120 grit, then put grey primer down and sand it again. Will show ya high and low spots....

Sounds like a good price for a quality job based on what I have been reading. If the warranty is in writing, bring it back every year if need be. It does sound fair to me.

I'd be careful about that warranty.....whats ugly to you could just be "aging" to the painter. I know the previous owner of my car paid $7500 for the repaintback in '95. Granted its a 2 tone and those are alot more $$$.

What do you all think about this price?
Well - the price isn't cheap.. but reasonable if they do good prep work...
Be careful-alot of people talk a good game. Make sure that you see examples of work he has done before...

These two comments are dead on. Anyone can explain what needs to be done. The proof is in his past performance. Make sure you see his recent paint jobs and talk to his former clients. If you don't like his work the day you pick it up, that warranty is meaningless.
Is he going to media blast or chemical strip? I've heard media blasting is the way to go. Good luck.
If I were you, I'd show up to look at the car during the preparation process. Educate yourself and know what should be done, know what he says will be done, and make sure he does it as told! Good paint over bad paint/prep work is never a solid foundation. Paint jobs in our area (Clarksville, TN) for Corvettes never go much leass than $5000. That includes taking the car down to the glass surface, refinshing all factory prepwork, repairing factory seams where needed, complete pre work and finally painting. Six months in the shop for painting is not unusual; it is a very time consuming job. Be careful. Consider fiber glass front and rear bumpers instead of the urethane.
Vettes are not metal bodied cars. I'd make sure this guy's past experience includes fiberglass cars, specifically Corvettes. Try to look at a couple of examples and talk to previous customers. Do your home work and all should be well. IF you don't have "warm and fuzzy" feelings after doing your homework and research, find somebody else. Locate Forum members near your area that may be able to recommend a good painter. Good luck and be skeptical! It's your money and your car!
After sanding down and painting (2) c-3s, I can tell you, that if it is done correctly, their is no way this guy is making any money! The materials alone are $1000.00! and the hours for prep work are countless! I believe a shop would have to charge at least $5000.00 just to meet overhead and make a
meager profit! I know it sounds like alot, but, when you add up the labor and materials thats about what they have to charge to stay in business-
