i've got two 15" pioneer subs, and looking for a good amp for a reaonable price. preferablly above 800w. woes any one have any ideas? does anyone else have 15's? thanks  ill post some pics once they are in
ive got now a sony 200w, running at 2ohm. i want to drop it to 1 ohm. right now its in my daily driver and wanting to transfer it to the vette. the only difference is that the daily car has an 85amp output on the alt., and the vette has like 55amp output. i was asking a friend of mine and he was telling me about getting a capasiter. he was explaning it but lost me. anyways.... im looking to spend about $250 to $350.
that site has some good deals. ive been looking on ebay for like two weeks and can't find anything. BTW, my subs can handle 1 ohm...thats why im looking for a amp that will do 1 ohm
now for the real question... where you going to put 2 15's, in the passenger seat ?? I'd barely have enough room in '78 that's got the larger hatch space to work with... I don't know how you're going to fit them in
Ry, Where exactly are you planning to put them? What year vette?
I have a pair of 10" subs in the back of my '68 vert using a false panel. I was not going to get anything bigger there so I settled for those. I also hid the amp behind the panel and had room to put the Mid/Highs. Carpeted the panel and it is a real neat installation. It is only 300W but in such a small space it is plenty.
What impedance are the speakers? 8, 4, or 2 Ohm. If the amp can go down to 1 Ohm you can parallel the 2 Ohm. If the amp is 2 Ohm you can parallel 4 Ohm but you have to series the 2 Ohm or run them from each side of the amp.

Do you have any pics of your set up I want to do my 68 vert and yours sounds like what I would like to do.
73Stingraycoupe,

Oops!
Just checked the pictures and the one of the stereo installation is missing!
i have a 73 coupe. me and some buddies of mine are gonna custom build the box. ill be sure to post picks when i get it built. my plans are 2 15s in the rear, 2 4x6 dash, and 5 1/4's in the kicks.
unless you have dual 4 ohm voice coils I don't see how you could wire 2 subs at 1 ohm, anyway running an amp at 1 ohm produces more distortion and an awful amount of heat. And the truth of stereo's is you get what you paid for unless your getting a great deal or used equipment a $300 amp rated at 200w and a $300 amp rated at 1200w will perform very similiar, I uesd to work on the philosphy if I had $400 in subs I would get an amp worth $400( I never pay full price, floor models are a great idea). I only buy equiptment with a good reputation, only Alpine head units, boston acoustic highs, jl subs, and alpine, or jl amps(I buy all my stuff from Tweeter). Kenwood also makes a decent amp for the cost, but just be weary of the numbers manufactors inflate their numbers( especially like profile, power acoustik, Autobhaun, etc) Also you'll pay more for an amp that is rated to run stable at 1 ohm then for an amp that gives you similar performance at 4 ohms stereoplus it won't have heating problems and run cleaner. Jl and alpine both make very good single channel amps that should be plenty of power to run 2 15" pioneers especially in a vette( I take it your not going for sound quality)and as far as a capasiter is concerned it's not a bad idea and would relieve a lot of stress on your alternator and cars 20+ year old electrical system(plus a cap is said to add 1 or 2 more dbl and add to the bass response, which your 15's will need all the help they can get) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...&category=1498 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=18797
these are 2 amps I would consider they should both provide more then enough power
I'm very curious to see your setup; I've got two 12" speakers in my car now, and there's not a whole lot of room. But then, I made sure I could still use the privacy shade (put my ttops on top of it) and I can still open the rear compartments.
you don't need a cap... you will need to upgrade your big 3 wires, new alt and possibly a new batt.
100% Correct-a-mundo.
Capacitor will not make up extra current not being produced by the alternator. (Unless it is the size of Volkswagon and charged overnight.) Caps can help smooth out instantaneous spikes in demand but don't have the capacity to store anything more than a fraction of a second's worth of power. Also consider that an alternator rated at 55 amps means 55 amps MAX. At idle you may only be getting 20 out of it. Output curve depends entirely on model. I fully second Metal Wulf's suggestions of replacing the alternator and upgrading the wires to heavier gauge. Battery really only if you plan on running it at high levels with the car off.
