So I park the Vette for the night a couple of evenings ago. As I turned to give those sexy lines one last look before I head into the house, I notice light shooting onto the ground from unerneath the car. I thought I had seen this once before but blew it off to me seeing things from exhaustion. Not this time. I got down and looked under the car, and sure enough, light coming from the enginge compartment. The underhood courtesy light is on 24/7 apparently. I am going to assume that the little plunger contact closure switch that would kill it when the hood closes is bad but I figured I would post and see if anyone had any ideas on what might cause this condition. There is a spade connector on one of the wires that runs into the light housing that I have pulled to kill the light and keep my battery from draining. Is this connector Bubba'd or does anyone else have it on their Vettes? I just keep finding little weird little things like this the longer I have this car. It is a bit like being on a scavenger hunt for the weird and unexplainable.
I would take a look at that connector. I don't have a hood light but when the button is pushed down it should break contact and the light should turn off. When the hood is up the button should come up and and contact within the switch should be made turning the light on. It's a possibility that the switch itself is bad, not set high enough to break contact when the hood is closed, or bubba'd with a shorter switch not making contact.
Good luck
I don't have an under light hood, but I had a problem with the alarm trip switch for the hood. Every time I would try to set my alarm it would just go off. In my case the switch was mounted on a bracket that had been bent down from all the times the hood closed. Bent it back up and the hood made contact with the switch again. Alarm works perfect now. So my point is you should check and make sure that switch hasn't moved from its original location and is still being pressed when the hood is closed.
Yep, I manually pushed down the switch to see if that the hood height was out of whack but it did not kill the light when all the way down. I am hoping that the switch is the problem. I do not want to get involved with wiring. I think I would rather set the car on fire than get involved with that.
Now that I think about it, I think you might be correct. The plunger switch I am talking about might be for the alarm on the car. That would explain why it does not kill the light when operated by hand. Thanks for the input on the issue.
