Header Gasket Help

I recently had to remove the passenger side "Hooker" header from my 454 to replace the starter. I have been through two gaskets (header to head) trying to re-install the header. Both have failed on no. 2 cylinder after a short period. These are good "ROL" gaskets that are a sort of cardboard material.
Any tricks/experiences in installing these gaskets. This is getting past the funny stage!! My partsman tells me that some people soak them in water first so they will swell up after installation. I have never heard of this before. Any suggestions??

I'd go ahead and spring for some Percy's soft metal gaskets. They're expensive, but they work when others don't.
