I'm ready to go to Electronic ignition....I've been doing a search on here to find out exactly what i need but can't put all the pieces together. I was looking at the 8572 distibutor and the 6A1. If I go this route what else will I need or have to change? Or what other options do I have?
Thanx for all your help!!
I would just save money and use your existing coil. The box and the distributor are all you need unless you have a roller cam then you need a bronze distributor gear.
The 8572 and the 6AL is a good combination. I also have the blaster 2 coil and 8mm MSD superconductor wires. If you go with the 8572 and have a roller cam they you don't need to change the gear. It is setup for the roller cam already. The only "problem" you may run into is wiring. The 6AL box is recommended that you wire the power and ground directly to the battery and since our batteries are in the back it makes for some interesting wiring schemes. I was lucky, my engine and tranny were out when I installed mine so I ran it in the same clamps with the starter wires through the tunnel.
sigforty - I think you mean a melonized (hardened) gear, not bronze (unless a melonized gear is bronze).
I love my system....very tunable.
If you're using Solid Core spark plug wires they'll have to go, they cause too much electro-magnetic interference.
Holy crap. I just figured out why the MSD box my dad had on his '64 wouldn't work. It's got to be for that reason. It worked at idle, but then it died on acceleration.

The Bronze MSD gear is hardened for use with racing and roller cams. I talked to the MSD reps on the Power Tour and they told me exactly what I needed to work with the ZZ4. They said the gear on the distributor is an iron gear and not meant for use with roller cams.
Some retro roller cames like my Crane have iron dist gears so check with the manufacturer to be certain. Seems a bronze dist gear would chew up a cam with a iron dist gear but I am not sure.
