Went to start my Vette yesterday and I got a BAD grinding sound from the starter / flywheel area. It hasn't been started in about 4 weeks but I've never had this problem before. What could it be??
Could be the bendix thing on the starter that throws the gear into the flywheel. It could also be a flatspot(damaged teeth) on the flywheel. These things can be caused by mis aligned starter or loose starter bolts, or the bendix going bad. if the starter bendix is bad hurry up and replace it before it f's up the flywheel teeth. You would have to pull the tranny to replace the flywheel. Did the car start? If so is it still making the noise? If it does it only once in a while, i would suspect flatspot on flywheel. if there is a flatspot then it may not start sometime. if that ever happens you can try to turn the engine over by hand a bit to move the bad teeth toa different position. You can inspect all the teeth by removing the starter and rotating the engine by hand little by little while looking where the starter would be to inspect the teeth.
You may have a couple chipped teeth on the flywheel. I'm asuming the sound is about the same as if you hit the key with the engine running. There may be one or there may be more bad spots on your flywheel. If you can turn the engine a little you should be able to get it started again but every time you shut it off you'll be playing roulette in regard to where the bad spot will land.
Well, the car didn't start! I noticed it a while back! It would just do it for a second then I'd try it again and it would start, but this time it just kept grinding. I tried it about 3 times and just gave up. Before I @#$% up something major!

Thanks for the help guys!!! Pulled the starter today and the front nose, where the gear is, was cracked causing the gear shaft to bind when trying to engage. Another Vette buddy had one, we changed it out and up and running again!!!!! :hurray:
