Default late/early '69

I'm sure this has been covered to death here but if someone could help great! How does one determine if their '69 is an early or latel model? Thanks in advance!

It all depends on the specific change that you're talking about. In general, early is pre-strike and late is post-strike. But in reality there were very many running changes throughout the long production run, and there's no easy rule to apply.

Shannon is correct, in terms of defining early/late items that changed around a certain date or vin number. Personally, i consider a 69 early if it was made in 68, but I might be the only person that looks at it that way! :) MJ

My car is Oct. 69. It is considered as a late 69 but I have some items that are early. 69's are full of odd things. There was a strike during the production years so they used whatever they needed to keep the line going. Even NCRS has trouble with these cars as to what's correct and what isn't.

I don't know if there is an official designation as to a 69 being an "early" or "late" production. What is your vin #... They were making somewhere around 3,000 to 3,300 per month, starting in August 68. (Didn't make many in August...only a few)

September was the first "real" production month, although it's considered to be the second month of production...

Mine is #0873, built on Sept. 9, 1968.... Stands to reason that mine's an "early" one.

There are a lot of parts that crossed over from 68 to 69, till they ran out... and other parts were changed through the model year...

I think an easy one to check is the hood release cable "mounted to the underside of the hood". If it's white... it's early; If it's black, it's late...

Just one of many....

I have found that the wiper door vacuum cannister is a pretty good "stake in the ground" - early had the "coffee can" style and late had the "pie pan" style. Seems pretty consistant.

That's funny... mine (0873) has a pie pan cannister... must have been changed along the way.....

Most certainly! Unfortunately, the overriding assumption whenever we state these "distinctions" between early/late is that "nothing has been changed".

Hood latch cable is another "wild card" - when I was putting mine together, I had bought a "black" cable but discovered that it needed a "white" cable - so obviously, the latches (at least the RIGHT one) had been changed.

I found Rick Bizzocco's book to be the best reference. That's what I used as a primary guide throughout.

My '69 has a 6/13 build date.I assumed it was a late build because my doorwindow vertical weatherstrip was a late one when it was replaced.
Old style wiper cannister and white across the hood cable which I just replaced says it's early.
Tough finding that white hood cable!
After 34 years and many owners and lall kinds of part changes who knows.

So... I guess there are early late 69's and late early 69's and all combinations thereof.
