Default Correct timing?

Ever since the timing chain was replaced in my 80 L48 it just seems like it doesn't have the power it used to have. My uncle set the timing on it, I think he set it at 8 degrees BTDC. Is that the correct timing? If it's not then what is? thanks in advance guys.

I set mine at 10 but many are 12 - 14.

Was only the timiing chain replaced and why was it replaced? The reason I ask is that if it were replaced due to a failure there could have been damage done to the cam or to other parts of the valve train, including the valves, that's sapping your power. Definitely check you timing with a light. Until you do there's no way of knowng if it's right or way wrong.

When my dad shut the car off one day it sputtered for a few seconds and then finally stopped running. The timing chain and gears were replaced. One of the gears had over half of the teeth broken off of it. I'll go check the garage and see if it's still out there, if it is I'll get a pic of it.

When those teeth broke off of the gear the cam either stopped turning altogether or it may have turned intermittantly while the pistons were still going up and down. A likely result would be bent push rods, damaged cam lobes, and/or bent valves. Any of those items being damaged would cause a power loss but also other symptoms like a rough idle, missing, etc.. I'd still check the ignition timing first but if that doesn't get you back to normal performance, I'd check out those other items next, starting with the pushrods.

Oh great. I'll fix the timing this weekend and if that doesn't work then it looks like I found my reason to rebuild the engine this winter.
