Default Your opinions please. Inexpensive solution.

I need some opinions here. Orange or silver BB valve covers. These are the painted 1987 454 stock covers. I don't want to dish out big bucks for new ones.

A. Silver

B. Chevy Orange

I like the silver more than the orange. But you might think about adding another choice. You could paint them in Black wrinkle finish. This would give you a nice contrast with the block and the intake and give the engine a purpose built look.

Hey Len,

Your new engine looks incredible!! I like the contrast of the orange and silver, so I'm going to vote for the orange valve covers. Have fun with your build-up and installation....although I'm sure you'll have MUCH more fun driving the finished product!!

The orange looks great, original, and provides a nice contrast with the intake. The silver looks surprisingly good, but blends in with the intake - a neat effect, but I prefer contrast. Plus, you will forever be answering the question, "Hey, shouldnt those valve covers be chrome, not silver?" :) MJ

What color is the block? The top one looks red and the bottom looks orange. I like the orange one. The silver one just doesn't do anything for me. I think that the orange just adds a little more detail to the engine. Just my .02

Thanks for the remarks guys. I like the chrome & aluminum ones too, but I know they'd only get all scratched up. I like the idea of using painted covers----if they get unsightly---just paint them again.

The silver looks good---actually the paint is "cast aluminum". I got the idea from a BB I saw. I think the guy had them powder coated though. They had an almost pearl type finish. I was hoping to get the same result, but it didn't turn out that way. The chevy Orange paint I used is Hi-temp "ceramic", it came out great with a high gloss durable finish. The aluminum is pretty much flat.

Vettefixr: Black! Aw, now I gotta paint them again to see how black-crinkle would look.

The block looks red in the one pic due to the lighting, but it's actually chevy orange.

Mark70---where ya been? Missed you around here.

Since the block is orange and the intake and heads are aluminum, I'd get the chrome ones. There is another post about 'new headers' where he is using chrome ones with crossed flags. They would look great with your engine. Looks great so far though! Can't wait to see it in the car.

I voted orange if you don't go chrome.

I honestly can't vote on this one, they both look FREAKIN AWESOME!!! WOW!!! That silver is stealthy and different, can't say I have ever seen that combo before. All I know is I think both of those look way better than chrome. Wanna trade big blocks??

I would try and find a nice set of chrome covers for cheap, otherwise, go with the silver.

I like the silver. To me it gives a cleaner, less cluttered look.

My vote is for the silver. I think it would provide a good background for all the stuff being bolted in and around the top of the engine. I think the orange would look too busy. If you would really like to see how they both look in a car, you're more than welcome to come on over and paint up mine!

I like the silver, but experience says go orange. The silver will show every grease smudge, and will be hard to clean,(unless maybe you clear coat over it) where the orange is glossy and the grease can be cleaned off.

Len,

Elizabeth likes the silver. I like the orange.

The orange will clean up nicer, but I what I like best is that it's unique. While the silver looks  , it still looks like a cost cutting maneuver. I don't get that from the orange.

Maybe 75stinger could do up a paisley version to break the tie.

I would say go with what you are prepared to deal with later. I believe they are supposed to be orange, and nobody will comment on them most likely.
The silver looks way cooler, but I would assume every gear head that looks at them will have something to say about it. Play it safe or get ready for the comments:)
Awesome engine!!
