Default Power Window Problems

I recently replaced the passenger door on my 73 coupe. It had working power windows before I started, but isince putting the whole set up back in place the movement is very slow and cannot go all the way up without help and doesn't go anywhere when the door is closed. I took a look at the driver's side door and realized that there was a spring inside the door that was hooked up for tension. The one on the passenger side is not hooked up at all. Is this my problem? If so how can I fix it ? Can the spring be moved? I also installed new weatherstripping around the window area, could this contribute to the problem? I took the window out when it was all the way up, is that the way to do it? I have to do the driver's side next and would like to be a little better prepared. Thanks

Hey, welcome to the forum!! A fellow NJian I see. :seeya

I just got finished with the windows on my 1980, so maybe I can help you out a little. As far as the spring on the window regulator goes, that needs to be installed for the window to go up and down right. If it's not, the window will struggle to go up and stop maybe half way, then if you send the window down, it'll rocket to the bottom. The spring may seem a little loose with the window all the way up, at least that's the way it is on mine. As far as I know, there is no way to adjust/tighten it . . . either it's on, or it's not.

Now I have a question about your window weather stripping. Did you use the "functional replacements" for the outter window seal? I bought a pair of those and spent hours trying to figure out why my windows would bind up or not go up straight. Turned out the new outter seals were the problem. I put the old ratty ones back on and the windows work great now.

And for taking the window out, I don't know how else you would do it if it wasn't all the way up, unless you used a vacuum to suck it out through the bottom of the door  .

You've come to the right place for info. Good luck!

Matt

The spring is needed to raise the window. The electric motor can not do it by itself. The spring is secured to the regulator by a slotted rivet- holes the middle of the spring an a rod extends from another section of the regulator and the curved end of the spring goes around it. Make certain that the spring helps raises the window and not pushes down on it.
There is an article in Zip Products website, I believe, that shows the removal/reinstallation of the window and the regulator. If you can not find the article let me know and I get the address for you. I have just finished overhauuling my pasenger door for window alignment and door latch adjustment. Make certain that you have adjusted the window for a correct fit with the top and front weatherstripping before installing the door interior panel.
