my 79 has been running warm since it's really hot outside, and I've been thinking of switching out the 5 blade clutch fan for a 7 blade......
will i realize any difference? this might be a dumb question
Not a dumb question since you would intuitively think that moving more air through the radiator should help...but it will likely not. If your car is suffering some overheating, you have to fix whatever is causing it. A higher capacity fan would be considered a bandaid fix...masks the problem without actually addressing the cause.
Many times, summertime overheating is due to a dirty/clogged radiator that can be successfully addressed by removing the radiator and taking it to a professional radiator shop for repair. You may end up re-coring or replacing it but that usually takes care of the problem. High flow pumps, electric high capacity fans, and other cooling system upgrades are useful in addressing engine upgrades where you're keeping the stock radiator and are in a marginal situation due to the greater heat being generated through the increased horsepower.
Ultimately, there is the Dewitt radiator package but I don't think you NEED to go that far just yet.
