My 82 drivers side window will not go up or down (currently stuck halfway) . I can hear the motor click when the switch is depressed and I replaced the motor a few months ago. Just before it stopped working I noticed that it appeared to be slowing down or getting in a bind. My question is assuming the motor is good and receiving the proper voltage to operate it, what is the most common problem with the window mechanism? Could it just need to be lubricated or something simple like that?
Check the curved gear that rides on the motor. The teeth on these commonly strip out. The major vendors sell replacement gears or you can look for a junk yard regulator. There is also a small bracket that often breaks that attaches to the door. This can let the whole mechanism slip off of the motor gear. Either way you will have to pull the door panel and access panel over the motor and have a look around.

Re: Advice needed on 82 power window (jwatty)
It's very possible that the ground has faulted. I have had this same thing happen to my '80 and a good wack to the door in the area of the window motor will make it work again, I know bubba, but sometimes this is all it is. Jim
I had a few minutes today so I pulled the door panel off and unbolted the motor from the window mechanism so I could get the window up. After about 30 minutes of trying to get the motor out of the door, it began to get dark, so I closed it back up so we could drive the car. I am getting power to the motor when the switch is depressed. Makes me wonder whether the gear mechanism that sits in the motor housing and drives the window mechanism drive mechanism has bearings that could be frozen? I replaced the motor a few months ago, but used my old gear assembly.
