leaky power valve?
Last week I was messing with the idle speed and got it up to about 1300rpms. Sounded great but when I shut the car off it ran on for a couple of seconds and backfired up through the carb. I have heard that usually takes out the power valve, is there a way to test it without removing the front bowl and replacing it? My carb is a Holley 850DP.

Holley carbs for years have had anti backfire check valves. A backfire should not take out the power valve. If the car starts and idles normal the next time you start it the power valve is ok. A blown power valve shows up as extremely rich, to the point that the car needs continual blipping of the throttle to keep idling.
