As I was thinking about it I realized that I don't under stand how engines area sized:eek: . Like the 305, 350, 454 and so on(why a 350 and not 345 or whatever). I know deferent automakers hand there own engines for there vehicle. I start getting confused when talking about boring it over:crazy: . I know why one would bore over. But what are the sizes before the bore over. Example ammo calipers I under there name to sizes of the shell .38 special, 38 super .45 acp, 50 cal..and there deferent applications. What area engine sizes before there are bored over and there intended use. I hope this question is relevant to this topic. Start small to large.
hmmmm...not sure what yur askin but...a 350 bored .030 over = 355. And a 400 bored .030 over = 406. Crank stroke makes a difference too. For instance you can install a 400 crank in a .030 over 350 block and you get a 383. Is that the kinda stuff you want to know?

umm kinda... Ok what sizes are engine blocks available(before being bored over.).
Please don't take this the wrong way but that looks like one hell of an eng in your sig pic for someone who doesn't understand bore/stroke. Sure someone with a bore/stroke ci chart will chime in and post it, there have been a lot of factory combo's over the years and throw in aftermarket blocks and cranks and you got many to choose from.
The cubic inches are measured by Pi (3.1415) times the radius of the bore squared, times the height(stroke), times the number of cylinders. Example. Pi X 4.0" (bore)=12.566 X 3.48(Stroke)=43.73 X 8 (#cly's) =348.84 which is a 350 engine. ( 5.7 liters) got it? quiz next Friday :jester
over the years SBC came in many sizes including, 283, 302, 305, 307, 327. 350 and 400. BB chevy came in 396, 402, 454.
Yes...This is the kind of the information I was looking for.

No problem. I am the first to admit my lack of knowledge of well everything. When I was younger I hanged around grearheads in high school but never really paid attention. Kinda of hard to get in to it when you don't have a ride. By then in my later teens I got side tracked PARTY! Anyway I am a little behind but coming up fast in rear mirror. Yeah that chart would be nice to get of a hold of. Need to go back to gearhead school.
409's evolved from the 348 available in 58 with tri-power. Never in corvettes though. Actually those were the forerunners of the 396-454 BB's that we know. The heads were quite dufferent.
