Is the ign system wired into the passkey module on an 89 Firebird? Obviously it is too top secret to list in the repair manual. I lost spark then lost crank, I bypassed the Passkey module and restored crank now I need to know if the Passkey module is wired into the ign system too. And if so, how do I bypass it? Not sure if the aftermarket bypass is working properly and I want to bypass ithe module totaly.
Well, there was PassKey and PassKey II. Not sure what all changed. My 96 has PassKey II. It would disable the injectors, so it would crank but not start.
As for bypassing it, no can do. PassKey is handled by a separate module. When the module is satisfied that the correct key is used it send a special signal to the computer (from memory: 50 Hz sine wave), and the computer allows the engine to run. So to bypass it you need something that generates this signal and it sounds like you already have such a box.
Thanks for the info. It has a Accel DFI in it instead of the stock computer. I think I found the pass key module and it has a few wires running out of it, one of which went to the gear position switch/sensor. I seem to be getting fuel, I have pressure and I can smell it after cranking it. I def have no spark coming from the remote coil but do have 12v going to it. I want to elimiate the passkey module as the cause while I work on testing the ign wiring.

If you are wondering if passkey would disable more than just crank, but ign ition also, my GUESS would be YES. If ignition was not disabled, than a manual tranny car could be cranked by push starting.
Try this web site it deals with all kinds of wiring issuses. There are bypass's for passkeyI, passkeyII and passlock used for remote starters. Maybe someone over there has a answer. http://www.The 12volt.com
The old VATS system in old third-gen F-bodies is a joke. The nugget in the key is a simple resistor, and there are only about 12 different values for the resistance. Take your key, measure the resistance, go to RadioShack and get a resistor with the same... resistance. (Said that word too much...) and stick it in the wires that run to the vats module. I think they're yellow, but I'm not too sure.

I take some exception to this... When passkey was introduced the Camaro/Firebird went from the most stolen car in the US to not even on the top-20 list. Obviously worked...

Good point. It may be the bypass module that is installed is malfuntioning or the accel ecm is. Either way, I want to bypass the passkey to avoid future problems. Seems the pass key sends a signal to the stock ecm but I am unsure if the sem holds true for the accel ecm. I will contact accel and see how their's functions.

Yup, I found the yellow module. Their is already a bypass installed so I have all kinds of after market stuff to deal with. Bright side, I'll know the wiring pretty good by the time I get this sorted out.
