I have a 71 coupe. Based on old recipts, the right rear wheel bearing was replaced (1995). I'd really like to have some major suspension work done this winter. I'm thinking of removing the trailing arms, half shafts, and rear differential and sending them to Van Steel for a total overhaul. Having been in the Army for 29 years, I'm into preventive maintenance. Here is the opinion thought I'm asking about. Would you guys do that to your car if there were no problems with the rear suspension?

Thanks....Rick

I'm a firm believer in PM too. If you have the time and enuff snow on the ground this winter, I say do it. Once you have that done, you shouldn't hafta worry bout the rear susp for another 6-7 yrs or so.

Yeah, I think I'd do it. My '71 left side bearings had gone 186K when I removed the trailing arm this winter. Had it rebuilt and the shop said it was just about dry. Glad I did. The right side has gone out twice, and it's not something you want to have happen. Really ripped up the brakes one time, and was out in the desert in Arizona the other. It's not the kind of thing you want to have just any local mechanic work on. Have it done by the pros before you need it.

Also - ditto the thanks for your service. We're the "Home of the Free" BECAUSE of the brave. :flag

If you can afford it, by all means do it. Much better to go through all of the rear suspension
before there is a problem. That is what I did.
