It seems that the two speakers on the drivers side no longer work. I say seems because it could be the radio, I'm not really sure. I don't want to install an aftermarket system if it can be avoided but I do want to be alble to enjoy the stereo. Is there a way to test the speakers/radio? Also, how do I remove the speaker grill in the dash? Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated.

It could be a connection in your wiring harness that caused both F/R on one side to go out. If I remember right, there may be a common ground for R and L sides.
My guess is your 21 year old radio may have hatched itself. Mine was toast with really bad reception, poor sound overall and speakers that were dry rotted. I replaced with new dash speakers, new Sony CD player and the custom speaker boxes for 6x9s that have been shown around the forum. Im really glad I did it too.
To remove the front speaker grill, there are just 2 little slots on either side of the dash that the grill fits into. Just pry from the edge towards the center to pop them out. Its almost too easy.
I replaced the speakers though when I had my interior ripped out so it was easy to do. With the dash in the car, you might be able to get them out with a right angle screwdriver.

when i first got my 82 i replaced all the speakers because the sound was so bad [ radio or the cassette]replace the factory radio, add a amp you will be a lot happier.

If you insist on keeping the factory radio, there's a shop here in town that repairs them. Zenith electronics I believe? Over off 59 and Kirby somewhere. The grills simply bend and pop out - they are just press fit in there. I believe it's a 9/32" head on the screws, too. (I don't know WHY GM didn't use 1/4"!)
